A novel radial basis function neural network for fault section estimation in transmission network

    Get PDF
In this paper, the application of Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF NN) to fault section estimation in power systems is addressed. The orthogonal least square algorithm has been extended to optimize the parameters of RBF NN. In order to assess the effectiveness of RBF NN, a classical Back-Propagation Neural Network (BP NN) has been developed to solve the same problem for comparison. Computer test is conducted on a 4-bus test system and the test results show that the RBF NN is quite effective and superior to BP NN in fault section estimation.published_or_final_versio

A urinary Common Rejection Module (uCRM) score for non-invasive kidney transplant monitoring.

A Common Rejection Module (CRM) consisting of 11 genes expressed in allograft biopsies was previously reported to serve as a biomarker for acute rejection (AR), correlate with the extent of graft injury, and predict future allograft damage. We investigated the use of this gene panel on the urine cell pellet of kidney transplant patients. Urinary cell sediments collected from patients with biopsy-confirmed acute rejection, borderline AR (bAR), BK virus nephropathy (BKVN), and stable kidney grafts with normal protocol biopsies (STA) were analyzed for expression of these 11 genes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). We assessed these 11 CRM genes for their abundance, autocorrelation, and individual expression levels. Expression of 10/11 genes were elevated in AR when compared to STA. Psmb9 and Cxcl10could classify AR versus STA as accurately as the 11-gene model (sensitivity = 93.6%, specificity = 97.6%). A uCRM score, based on the geometric mean of the expression levels, could distinguish AR from STA with high accuracy (AUC = 0.9886) and correlated specifically with histologic measures of tubulitis and interstitial inflammation rather than tubular atrophy, glomerulosclerosis, intimal proliferation, tubular vacuolization or acute glomerulitis. This urine gene expression-based score may enable the non-invasive and quantitative monitoring of AR

    Simplicial gauge theory on spacetime

We define a discrete gauge-invariant Yang-Mills-Higgs action on spacetime simplicial meshes. The formulation is a generalization of classical lattice gauge theory, and we prove consistency of the action in the sense of approximation theory. In addition, we perform numerical tests of convergence towards exact continuum results for several choices of gauge fields in pure gauge theory.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure

High-energy scale revival and giant kink in the dispersion of a cuprate superconductor

In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. The incoherent nature of the spectra suggests that the hopping-dominated dispersion occurs possibly with the assistance of local spin correlations. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate in the low energy region. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. on May 21, 200

Synchrony of clinical and laboratory surveillance for influenza in Hong Kong

Background: Consultation rates of influenza-like illness (ILI) in an outpatient setting have been regarded as a good indicator of influenza virus activity in the community. As ILI-like symptoms may be caused by etiologies other than influenza, and influenza virus activity in the tropics and subtropics is less predictable than in temperate regions, the correlation between of ILI and influenza virus activity in tropical and subtropical regions is less well defined. Methodology and Principal Findings: In this study, we used wavelet analysis to investigate the relationship between seasonality of influenza virus activity and consultation rates of ILI reported separately by General Out-patient Clinics (GOPC) and General Practitioners (GP). During the periods 1998-2000 and 2002-2003, influenza virus activity exhibited both annual and semiannual cycles, with one peak in the winter and another in late spring or early summer. But during 2001 and 2004-2006, only annual cycles could be clearly identified. ILI consultation rates in both GOPC and GP settings share a similar non-stationary seasonal pattern. We found high coherence between ILI in GOPC and influenza virus activity for the annual cycle but this was only significant (P<0.05) during the periods 1998-1999 and 2002-2006. For the semiannual cycle high coherence (p<0.05) was also found significant during the period 1998-1999 and year 2003 when two peaks of influenza were evident. Similarly, ILI in GP setting is also associated with influenza virus activity for both the annual and semiannual cycles. On average, oscillation of ILI in GP and of ILI in GOPC preceded influenza virus isolation by approximately four and two weeks, respectively. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that consultation rates of ILI precede the oscillations of laboratory surveillance by at least two weeks and can be used as a predictor for influenza epidemics in Hong Kong. The validity of our model for other tropical regions needs to be explored. © 2008 Yang et al.published_or_final_versio

Proteomic approach to study the cytotoxicity of dioscin (saponin)

    Get PDF
Dioscin, extracted from the root of Polygonatum zanlanscianense pamp, exhibits cytotoxicity towards human myeloblast leukemia HL-60 cells. Proteomic analysis revealed that the expression of mitochondrial associated proteins was substantially altered in HL-60 cells corresponding to the dioscin treatment, suggesting that mitochondria are the major cellular target of dioscin. Mitochondrial functional studies validated that mitochondrial apoptotic pathway was initiated by dioscin treatment. Changes in proteome other than mitochondrial related proteins implicate that other mechanisms were also involved in dioscin-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells, including the activity impairment in protein synthesis, alterations of phosphatases in cell signaling, and deregulation of oxidative stress and cell proliferation. Current study of protein alterations in dioscin-treated HL-60 cells suggested that dioscin exerts cytotoxicity through multiple apoptosis-inducing pathways. © 2006 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Formation of cyanide-functionalized SBA-15 and its transformation to carboxylate-functionalized SBA-15

[[abstract]]Cyanide-functionalized mesoporous silica SBA-15 (CN/SBA-15) with pore diameters larger than 6 nm has been prepared by a one-pot synthesis. The structure of CN/SBA-15 is affected by the amount of the functional silane 2-cyanoethyltriethoxysilane (CTES) and the conditions of co-condensation in the acidic aqueous solution of the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123: whereas direct mixing of the silica sources CTES and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) leads to a disordered hybrid material, a highly ordered CN/SBA-15 is obtained if the synthesis solution containing CTES is prepared first and TEOS added afterwards. Treatment of the as-synthesized materials with concentrated sulfuric acid removes the copolymer template through ether cleavage and hydrolyses the -CN groups in one step, resulting in carboxylate-functionalized SBA-15 (CA/SBA-15). C-13 CP/MAS NMR spectra show that for some CN/SBA-15 materials the copolymer template can be totally removed in this way, suggesting that all the hydrophilic ethylene oxide (EO) chains of the template are accessible to the acid. Nitrogen sorption measurements also indicate that these materials contain nearly no micropores in contrast to the pure-silica SBA-15 synthesized under the same conditions, which has a considerable proportion of micropores. The results suggest that the structural order and microstructures of the resulting CN/SBA-15 materials are strongly affected by assembly kinetics, which involve the hydrolysis and condensation of silica species and their interaction with the template.[[fileno]]2010333010012[[department]]化學
